The reserve is located on a large piece of land reclaimed from the river, by filling in a portion of it with rubble from demolitions carried out for the construction of highways in the 70s and 80s.
Although the original objective of these landfills was to urbanize them to turn them into a ´´exanche of the central area´´ of the city, this project was finally canceled and the land was abandoned.
During the years of abandonment, the land spontaneously developed a true sample of the different native ecosystems of the Chacopampean plain: grasslands, lagoons, willow and acacia forests, etc., with great wealth in terms of flora and fauna.
The Ecological Reserve is open throughout the year, and is accessed free of charge, through its entrance located on the southern breakwater of the Costanera Sur. The address of the reserve is Av. Tristán Achával Rodríguez 1550 and it is open from 8:00 to 19:00.
The Buenos Aires Ecological Reserve, also called the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, is a gigantic green space in the City of Buenos Aires (350 ha) located on the coast of the Río de la Plata, in the Puerto Madero neighborhood.
A very popular activity that takes place within it is the observation of birds and other animals. It is also common to see people exercising or walking along its trails, taking photographs (from there you have what is perhaps the best view of the city) or simply resting.
