The Itaú Cultural Institute, founded on February 23, 1987, designed by Olavo Egydio Setúbal and created with the advent of Sarney Law - No. 7505, of October 3, 1986; aims to encourage artistic and theoretical research and production related to various cultural segments.

It was elected by the Great Place to Work Institute (GPTW) as one of the 100 best companies to work for in Brazil.
Created in 1987, with the inauguration of the first Center for Informatics and Culture (CIC I), Instituto Itaú Cultural is open to the public on October 5, 1989. Its Computerized Database becomes available to visitors, and the institute makes it became the first institution in Latin America to offer this type of service.
In 1997, the first edition of Rumos is launched, a program for the promotion of artistic production in various areas and which will become the flagship of the Institute's actions. A year later, in 1998, the institution adopts its current logo and the name Instituto Itaú Cultural.
In 2000 Itaú Numismatics - Herculano Pires Museum is open to the public on the 9th floor of Itaú Cultural, with a collection of over 2,000 Brazilian coins, medals and decorations.
In 2001, Milú Villela assumed the presidency of the Institution and the Itaú Cultural Encyclopedia of Visual Arts was inaugurated, an evolution of the work begun in 1987 with the creation of the Computerized Database. In 2004, The Encyclopedia Itaú Cultural de Teatro, a virtual reference work on theater activities in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, from 1938 to 2000, with a total of 600 entries, is launched on the Itaú Cultural website.
In 2007, the institute celebrates two decades with the launch of the new website, the web radio, the magazines Continuum and Observatory Itaú Cultural and the exhibition Itaú Cultural 20 Anos.
Itaú Cultural's main program, Rumos was created in 1997 to stimulate Brazilian artistic and intellectual production in the areas of music, visual arts, audiovisual, dance, research, art and technology, literature, education and cultural journalism.
With a national character, Rumos mobilizes, through public notices, artists and creators from all Brazilian regions, broadening the look at art that is made outside the Rio-São Paulo axis.
In 2014, the online encyclopedia started to include episodes and artists from the dance, film and music areas and was readjusted to be accessed in a unified way.
