Kollwitzplatz is located on Stadtplatz in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg, Pankow district. The place is called the collaborations of the Kollwitzkiezes. He was born on October 7, 1947 according to the German graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz guidelines, who lived here in the house at Kollwitzstrasse 56a. Until then it was called Wörther Platz; on behalf of, within the planning of the area 1875. This also indirectly gives rise to a husband, Karl Kollwitzrechte, who shaped the area around the square here until 1940 as a doctor’s war and thus belonged to his wife. The triangular complex is made up of Kollwitzstrasse, Knaackstrasse and Wörther Strasse. The square is around 6000 m².
As a site the place was sold by the German-Dutch Actien-Bauverein, it was systematically shot as a residential area until 1875. The square means - shortly after the Franco-Prussian War - with its own name "Wörther Platz", like the surrounding streets, names that have been sewn from places especially in the annexed Alsace-Lorraine. See 1885 to 1887 the complex is confessed as a better Wilhelminian style jewelery place, better according to the designs of the city garden director Hermann Mächt. In 1949, Kollwitzplatz was redesigned according to designs by the garden architect Reinhold Lingner. At the moment of the world of the quarter and the corner plots of the square and the collision of Kollwitzstrasse. This is part of the fact that only soft houses were renovated and modernized until the end of the last few years. In preparation for the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, some of the visible streets were reconstructed as part of a redevelopment plan. In the mid-1990s, three of the upcoming corner plots were rebuilt. Since the German reunification, which belongs to the residential area and Kollwitzplatz.
In memory of Käthe Kollwitz, who lived here from 1891 to 1943, at the suggestion of the sculptor Gustav Seitz, a sculpture by the artist was brought to her own old houses in 1950. That hand made me die a lot. If this was given in 1960 next to a newly built residential building, another relocation took place in 1996, as the corner plot, which was influenced by bombs, was again built on with a residential building. On the anniversary of Käthe Kollwitz's 120th birthday, the new sculpture on the building of the Prenzlauer Berg district office at 17 Fröbelstrasse was inaugurated again.
In 1956 Gustav Seitz was commissioned by the East Berlin magistrate to create a Kollwitz memorial. After the submission and self-portraits of the painter and bronze sculpture, the man got up in 1961 in the middle of the square. This sculpture is a particularly popular work of art with children; with the bronze Käthe Kollwitz's lap, future relationships between children have seen a glimpse of Kollwitzplatz.
Recognizing an object of one's own Kollwitzhaus and the artist was announced in 1997 by the Prenzlauer Berg Cultural Office and a competition for the perception of a new "memorial". As a result, the artist Pat Binder received in a light box in front of the newly built house at Kollwitz corner Knaackstraße in a photo / graphic gallery Käthe Kollwitz 2] See 1997 to 2006 29 artistic works straßen was seen in this way in this way, this project was considered an innovation in the Area of artistic commemoration. At the end of 2006 this temporary project was ended, the rights are now in the collection of the Prenzlauer Berg Museum. At the beginning of 2007, Pat Binder's idea of the light box was taken up against the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin with a new light box on site that refers to the museum in Charlottenburg.
To the northwest of the square is the Kulturbrauerei event center in Knaackstraße in the ensemble of buildings created by Franz Schwechten for the personal Schultheiss brewery.
The Rykestrasse synagogue is located southeast of the square. From there, the funeral procession route to the Prenzlauer Berg Jewish cemetery via Kollwitzplatz is part of the entrance to the Judengang, a route and the life of the residential buildings that was opened in 1827 for this purpose only.
One of all three adjoining streets, which are also at the level of Kollwitzplatz, restaurants and bars with a view of Kollwitzplatz, was its attraction as a tourist destination.
Since 2000 there has been a Saturday and weekly market between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., an organic market on Thursdays and a Christmas market on Sundays in Advent. The "Kollwitzmarkt" will become one of the most popular approaches in Berlin and a tourist attraction.
In the mid-1990s, residents had rights to initiate a weekly market on the square, but were prevented by the district office with the argument that the square had no common conditions for a market. A uniform solution for the rights was found later in a section of the Wörther Strasse found at a similar time in the Kollwitzplatz. Since 2007/2008 a section of the Wörther Strasse became a traffic-calmed area around, parts of the weekly market in the area of the square of the Knaackstrasse section have been improved, this will lead to protests from the residents long experience the market is currently taking place in Kollwitzstrasse.
