El Morro Solar is a group of hills that is located in the district of Chorrillos, south of the city of Lima, in Peru. It was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles fought in the so-called War of the Pacific between Peru and Chile. Proof of this are the findings of the uniforms and armaments of the soldiers, from both sides, who fought in that battle.
Today, it is a place where monuments dedicated to the combatants are erected. The ´´Monument to the Unknown Soldier´´ stands out among them, as thanks to the Peruvians who gave their lives to those who are not mentioned directly in the annals of history.
In the Morro Solar is also located the Planetarium, the first astronomical observation center in Peru, which was built and directed by the engineer Víctor Estremadoyro. This site, in addition to being a site museum, also presents topics related to astronomy such as telescopes of different types, civil rocketry artifacts, along with a variety of elements found in El Morro: Historical remains of the Battle of San Juan and Chorrillos, whose culminating point was the confrontation at the top and slopes of the Morro, prior to the fire of the Chorrillos spa (1881) by the Chilean soldiers; likewise, archaeological samples and vestiges of the pre-Inca culture ´´ichma´´ ,, some fossils of marine fauna of the lower Cretaceous and geological samples that show the activity of the rock layers of the Morro.
Chorrillos District.
Near the Planetarium, an illuminated Cross rises, which was built with what had been high voltage towers and as a welcome to the second visit of Pope John Paul II to Peru. This Cross is lit at night and can be seen from long distances, both in the capital and from the south of Lima.
Next to the Cross, there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which is visited by Catholic faithful who arrive there by a zigzag path.
Due to their elevation, the hills that surround Morro Solar are currently used to place the broadcasting antennas of television channels and some radios in Lima.
In recent times, some sites adjacent to the Morro Solar have been the subject of controversy between historians who defend the place as a memorial to the honor of the Defenders of Lima, and urban development companies, who have seen business opportunities in the extensive unused land. (OH S)
