It was inaugurated in 1938 with a capacity for 70,000 spectators. El Monumental is the official venue for the matches of the Argentine National Team.
It is also the venue for the main Los Pumas test-matches and historic concerts such as The Rolling Stones, U2, Amnesty International, Madonna, Guns´n Roses, Robbie Williams, Chayanne, Eric Clapton and Red Hot Chilli peppers, among others.
The Club Atlético River Plate was founded on May 25, 1901 in the La Boca neighborhood. On a carnival night, a group of young people took red ribbons that were hanging from a car and pinned them on the white shirts they used to identify themselves. There, ´´La Banda Roja´´ was born. Then the club moved to Palermo and then to Belgrano.
River Plate has 32 local titles and 5 international cups.
The River Plate club has first-rate facilities, a 3,500-square-meter interactive museum and an indoor Olympic pool. More than 60 sports, social and cultural activities are practiced.
Among the most prominent players are Di Stéfano, Sívori, Labruna, Amadeo Carrizo, Alonso, Passarella, Francescoli, Saviola, Crespo, Aimar and Gallardo.

River Stadium is popularly known as ´´El Monumental´´, since it was one of the first great stadiums in South America.
