In 1990, it was declared by UNESCO as a Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity and was created to preserve its natural environments and the species they contain. Río Abiseo is home to what may be Peru's best preserved mountain forests. In its steep mountains and steep gorges, the vegetation reaches almost unrealistic levels of exuberance. The reason for this profusion of life stems from the abundant humidity that sustains the place: almost five meters of rain a year that, together with particular soil conditions, allow for a true jungle hanging in the clouds.
The Abiseo River National Park is located in Peru, in the Amazon and San Martin regions, Mariscal Cáceres province, Juanjui capital, Huicungo district, in one of the few sparsely populated Andes. The Rio Abiseo National Park extends covering the entire watershed that gives it name.
