The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant is a binational hydroelectric power plant located on the Paraná River, on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The dam was built by both countries between 1975 and 1982, during which time both were governed by military dictatorships. The name Itaipu was taken from an island that existed near the construction site.
Its lake has an area of 1,350 km2, ranging from Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil and Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, to Guaíra and Salto del Guairá, 150 km to the north. With 20 generating units of 700 MW each and a 118 m hydraulic project, Itaipu has a generating capacity (capacity) of 14,000 MW. It is a binational venture run by Brazil and Paraguay on the Paraná River in the border section between the two countries, 15 km north of the Friendship Bridge.
