Founded by the Spaniards on 15 August 1537 by Juan de Salazar y Espinoza, it is one of the oldest cities in South America. It is known as '' Mother of Cities '', for it was from this nucleus that colonial expeditions were born to founding other important cities like Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia), Corrientes, Santa Fe, Concepción del Bermejo and the second foundation of Buenos Aires (Argentina) in the year 1580.
Asunción in times of commercialization of coffee and yerba mate, was a city that commanded the most developed country of Latin America and the Caribbean (except the areas of the European powers or colonies). It had great influence both here and abroad and so needed some way out to the ocean to market its products to the main European power; Great Britain.
In the context of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), it was sacked in January 1869 by Brazilian troops for three days and occupied by the Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan allies between 1869 and 1876.
Asuncion (in Castilian Asunción, with its full name Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. It is located on the banks of the Paraguay River, in the south of the country, still being the main fluvial port (Port of Asunción) and industrial and cultural center of the country. The main industries are footwear, textiles and cigarettes.
The city is built on the left bank of the Paraguay River, almost opposite the confluence of the latter with the Pilcomayo River, thus delimiting the bay of Asunción.
In the city you can visit the Godoi Museum, the Church of La Encarnación and the National Pantheon. This last one is a small version of Les Invalides, of Paris, where many of the national heroes are buried.
Other monuments are the Palacio de los López (presidential palace), the old Senate building, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Independence House (one of the few examples of colonial architecture still standing in the city). main buildings built in the periods of Rodriguez de Francia and Lopez
Among other monuments, the Opera House, built under the government of Francisco Solano López, was looted, burned down and almost totally demolished by the Brazilians in 1871, during the Paraguayan War).
The center of Asuncion is located near the river and is located in the historical part of the city, it is currently an eminently commercial area, although it was once the residence of the most representative families. The most famous districts of the city are: Saxony, Obrero, San Roque, Las Mercedes, Villa Morra and Trinidad.
The city has a river terminal (almost in front of the Argentine city of Clorinda), a botanical garden, and in the city of Luque, Silvio Pettirossi International Airport and a bus terminal
