The Sanctuary of Covadonga is a cave in the interiors of Mount Auseva, which gives the name to the parish of Covadonga in the county of Cangas de Onís.

The origin of the cave as a place of worship is controversial. The tradition says that Don Pelayo, persecuted a criminal who took refuge in the cave, but a hermit who prayed to the Virgin Mary, asked Pelayo to forgive the transgressor, since he had fled to the protection of the Virgin. Some historians say that the most plausible is that Pelayo and Christian refugees carried with them an image of the Virgin that they left there after their victory in the battle of Covadonga.
