Monaco
The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and therefore a micro-state, situated in the south of France. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the principality, founded in 1297 by the House of Grimaldi - to this day its sovereign - is less than 20 kilometers east of the city of Nice and 20 kilometers west of the town of Ventimiglia. It covers approximately 202 hectares (2.02 km²), being the second smallest State in the world, behind only the Vatican, with 44 hectares of area, and is the state with the highest population density in the world.
It has as form of government the constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch is Its Serene Highness the prince-sovereign Albert II of Monaco.
Monaco is one of the six microstates in Europe and one of the 24 in the world. It has been ruled for more than seven centuries by the House of Grimaldi, being one of the 48 monarchies of the present time. The country has its economy based on tourism, and is known for its Formula 1 circuit, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Monte Carlo casino and for hosting the World Music Awards. Another attraction of Monaco is the reputation of tax haven, and investors are not subject to income taxes. For these various factors, Monaco has one of the highest living costs on the planet.
The population of Monaco has a rare characteristic: its native inhabitants (the Monegasque) are a minority in their own country, making up only 21.6% of the total population. The French are 28.4% and the Italians 18.7%.
