Tabanan
Tabanan is a regency of Bali, Indonesia. It has an area of 839.33 km2.
Tourism
There is a lot to visit in the city of Tabanan and some of them will be helpful to reach interesting sights in the region.
There are numerous small roads and broken trails leading from the coastal road south of Tabanan to the seafront.
The beaches here are all black sand. The best known of them, and one with some good accommodation options, is Yeh Gangga. It is well-signposted on the main coast, about 2.5 km west of Tabanan. Be warned that much of the west coast is not safe for swimming.
A small but well kept center for butterfly research and education with some very spectacular species on display.
Pure Luhur Batukaru (Batukaru Temple), near the village of Wongayagede.
One of Bali's main temples and a pilgrimage site for Balinese Hindus. Majestically situated on the slopes of Mount Batukaru since the 11th century, this is an especially sacred place, even by Bali standards and all visitors should carefully read and respect the temple rules posted clearly at the entrance.
Taman Ayun in Mengwi
Pura Taman Ayun (Mengwi Water Temple), (2 km west of Mengwi, on the road to Abiansemal).
This temple was built in 1634 by the king of Mengwi.
Sangeh Monkey Grove (Bukit Sari), Sangeh (the village of Sangeh is on the small road leading from Abiansemal to Petang, northeast of Pura Taman Ayun). The monkeys here act as guardians of the Puri Buki Sari (Bukit Sari Temple).
Legend has it that these monkeys are descendants of the army assembled by the king of ape Hanuman and that the forest here is a fragment of Mount Meru that fell to the ground. The temple was built in the 17th century. The monkeys here are bold as elsewhere in Bali, so hang your belongings. Sangeh goes well with a visit to Pure Taman Ayun.
Subak Museum (Mandila Mathika Subak), Jl Raya Kediri, Sanggulan Village (2 kilometers east of Tabanan City Center).
This museum is dedicated to the famous subak non-mechanized irrigation system that has been used in Bali since 600 AD.
Others like Alas Kedaton, Tanah Lot Temple, Jati Luwih Rice Terrace, Taman Pujaan Bangsa Margarana (Margaret Memorial Park) are interesting places to visit as well.
