The Museum of Art History in Vienna (in German: Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the first museums of fine arts and decorative arts in the world that is located in the city of Vienna.
It was opened in 1891, built by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer in Italian Renaissance style to house the vast imperial collection of the Habsburgs, who over the centuries have been enthusiastic patrons of the arts. Its collection is one of the richest in its genre, and was formed from the art and curiosity offices of Archduke Ferdinando and Leopoldo Guilherme, and Emperor Rodolfo II.
The collection covers pieces from Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquity to Baroque art, and is divided into the main headquarters in Vienna and the subsidiary museums of Ambras Castle and the Lipizzaner Museum in Innsbruck, and the palaces of Hofburg and Schönbrunn, also in Vienna. Since 2006, the Museum of Ethnology and the Austrian Theater Museum are part of the complex.
Its departments are constituted as follows:
Appearance of the staircase inside.
Gallery of Paintings, from one of the oldest private princely collections. It was founded by Archduke Leopoldo Guilherme in the middle of the 17th century with works acquired from the governor of the Netherlands. He has about 1,400 paintings, especially by Venetian masters (Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, and others), but also Flemish like van Eyck, Rubens and van Dyck.
Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, one of the largest in the world for works from the ancient dynasties of Egypt. Started in the middle of the 19th century, it grew with acquisitions, donations and new excavation findings. Its section on the Near East features rarities from southern Arabia.
Greek and Roman antiquities, originally from the Habsburg collection, it is also one of the most important in the world. It covers a period from the Bronze Age in Cyprus (3,000 BC) to Slavic finds from the first millennium before the Christian era. It has very rare pieces of cameos and treasures dating from the Great Migration of the early Middle Ages.
