The Manu National Park was established on May 29, 1973 by Supreme Decree No. 0644-73-AG. It is located in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios. The National Park has been recognized as a Natural Heritage of Humanity in 1987, and previously (1977), UNESCO recognized it as the core area of the Biosphere Reserve. The Manu National Park has an area of 1,532,806 hectares and represents part of the great biological diversity that exists in the Amazon.
Due to the altitudinal variation, from 200 to almost 4,000 m.a.s.l., it has almost all the subtropical ecological formations of eastern Peru. In this immense surface there are species and ecosystems of great scientific interest. In the vicinity of the rivers there are characteristic trees, such as the keto (Cecropia sp.) And the topa (Ochroma sp).
Manu is located in the south eastern region of Peru. Manu National Park, located 650 kilometers from Puerto Maldonado Its area comprises part of the mountain range of the department of Cusco and the jungle of the department of Madre de Dios. With more than 2 million hectares, it is a territory rich in species of flora and fauna in a wide variety of habitats including high Andean, cloud forest and rainforest.
In this area, not only the fauna and flora or its beautiful landscapes are of interest. In its vicinity live populations grouped in more than 30 rural communities that maintain Quechua as their mother tongue. There are also native Amazonian populations belonging to different linguistic groups that have occupied the area ancestral, such as the Matsiguenka, Amahuaca, Yine, Amarakaeri, Huachipaire, Mashco Piros and Nahua ethnic groups.
In addition, there are archaeological remains not yet studied, as well as others well known, such as the Petroglyphs of Pusharo, in the region of the Palotoa River and the Ruins of Mameria.
Among the objectives of the creation of the National Park is to conserve a representative sample of the biological diversity of the rainforest of southeastern Peru, in order to contribute to regional development through research and monitoring of environmental parameters. It also seeks to develop anthropological programs related to the communities settled in the national park
