The reserve is made up of two basins: the Alto Cañete basin, in the upper basin of the Cañete river, in the north of the Yauyos province, Lima region, and the Cochas-Pachacayo river basin, southwest of the Jauja province. , in the Junín region, which flows into the Mantaro River.

There are two ways to get to the Reserve. The South Pan-American Highway (Lima to San Vicente de Cañete, deviation at kilometer 144) and the Central Highway (deviation at kilometer 175), the first paved to Lunahuaná, and the second fully paved. It is possible to cross the entire reserve through paths that connect the two main roads. They are bridle paths.

It has an area of 221,268 hectares. And it presents a typical biological diversity of Andean areas, not very abundant, but specific to Andean areas and in some cases endemic to the region.

Some plant species are quinual (Polylepis racemosa), quishuar (Buddleia incana) and colle (Buddleia coriacea).

The most representative animal species are the duck (Anas bahamensis), great white heron (Casmerodius albus), huashua (Chloephga melanoptera), harrier (Circus cinereus), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), condor (Vultur gryphus), muca (Didelphis marsupialis ), Andean fox (Dusicyon culpaeus), puma (Felis concolor), wild cat (Felis colocolo, Felis jacobita), alpaca (Lama glama pacos), llama (Lama glama), vizcacha (Lagidium peruanum), marmosa (Marmosa elegans), gray deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and vicuña (Vicugna vicugna).
