It is a story of a rebellious people that constantly fights for the defense of their natural rights that has assisted them since 1533, although there are historical sources that indicate that the presence of human groups dates back to the 16th century, with the presence of a pre-Columbian culture. in the Vilcabamba area and even in the current Quillabamba where ceramic remains and other samples of Pre-Inca cultures have been found.
In 1650, the townships had been established since then this province shows an advance in colonization for the exploitation of natural resources, as well as the presence of religious orders of Jesuits, Dominícos and Agustinos, which later in 1767 the Jesuits were expelled by Orders of the Spanish Crown, in 1899 the Franciscans entered the area.
On July 25, 1857, the Law was promulgated by the National Convention creating the Province of La Convencion, until 1880 the province remained without a populated center, in 1881 by deed of session and donation Don Martín Pío Concha gave up a third of his estate called Quillabamba so that the populated center rises.
In 1909, Law 1220 on mountain lands was promulgated, the concentration of the rural population was promoted and, on the other hand, the control of the Upper Urubamba area began, many pioneers made complaints using one of the 4 forms indicated by the law: purchase, complaint, free award and concession.
In 1930, the province suffered one of the biggest disasters, malaria broke out, producing 85% depopulation, weakening the development process which lasted a decade, from then on the urgent need for labor arises, so that the landowners adopt to offer plots of land for labor or lease, for which the tenant had to pay the rent in work to what he came to call "The Colonization" which were the days that he had to go to work the land of the hacienda, as well as a number of days to harvest the products, the driving days vary according to the extension of the land received.
In 1960 in the province the extension of 60,000 tenants was calculated, which provoked confrontations between antagonistic classes of landowner-peasant, with the emergence of conventional unionism.
In 1963 40 peasant unions appeared with 5,500 members, rapidly increasing to 122 affiliated unions, which through this raised some demands through the Convenciano union movement such as:
Abolition of subhuman living conditions in the countryside.
Substitution of the payment with work of the lease of the plot by payment in money.
Right to sow 10% of the land in food crops
Right to buy land for tenants and relatives, prohibition of the obligation to sell the crops on the hacienda and to buy in these goods.
Land concession to new tenants for a minimum of six years in parcels of bread and for 10 years if industrial products are grown.
In 1962, in Chaupimayo Hugo Blanco and Luis de la Puente Uceda met in which they proposed 2 alternatives: Trade Unions or Guerrillas, of which Blanco was for the first.
On April 24, Law 006 was promulgated, abolishing the conditions and different forms of exploitation. The peasantry agreed with this law.
On May 30, 1993 Hugo Blanco is captured and withdrawn from the area, the conventional union movement is extinguished towards the south, then the Agrarian Reform Law and Law 14444 are promulgated, declaring the initial zone of the agrarian reform to the valleys of La Convention and Lares in order to stifle and neutralize the peasant movement.
In July 1993, the agrarian reform was applied for the first time at Hacienda Potrero, which had an area of 1,545 hectares, receiving 400 peasants.
In 1964, the APRA-ODRIISTA coalition passed the Agrarian Reform Law 15077 in parliament to neutralize the peasant struggle that was still latent.
On June 24, 1969, the government of Velasco Alvarado issued the D.L. In 17716 seeking to consolidate the reforms that he had proposed at the national level, the convencianos peasants through their union organizations not only achieve changes in the landlord-tenant relations, but also through union pressure they manage to expel the landowners and modify the feudal relations of exploitation .
At the end of 1994, the Cooperatives Law No. 15260 was issued; whose objective was to excite the peasantry, neutralize the insurgent movement, obtain income for the state and consolidate private enterprise.
The province has two Cooperative Centers, the Central de Cooperativas "Te Huyro" Ltda. Nº33 located in the district of Huayopata constituted by 3 Cooperatives and the Central de Cooperativas Agrarias "COCLA Ltda. Nº 81" constituted by 07 cooperatives and 2,500 farmers currently has managed to centralize and 26 Cooperatives.
At present, the capital Quillabamba is the most important city in the province as it is the collection point for the main products, a sample of this dynamic is the existence of shopping centers, commercial banks, savings banks, we find more than a hundred merchants dedicated to the purchase and sale of agricultural products.
From the application of the Agrarian Reform Law, changes in the agrarian structure, the recomposition of social classes, are observed, in greater difference in the peasant social strata and in the ideological changes of the different social classes.
