Maraú originates in a village that was founded in 1705 by Italian Capuchin friars, who settled in a village of Indians called "Mayrahú".

The town of Barra Grande is the center of the municipality, where most of the rustic inns and infrastructure are located. It is from Barra Grande that the boats and tour boats leave for the beaches and islands.

The village is very rustic, with sandy streets, but very well maintained.

The nightlife in tourist times is quite hectic but with very good ambience
